How to Avoid WFH Burnout: Signs You Are Working Too Much

The biggest myth about remote work is that we slack off. The reality? Remote workers often work longer hours than their office counterparts.

Why? Because there is no commute to signal the "end" of the day. The laptop is always right there.

Identify the Signs

You might be burning out if:

  • You feel guilty anytime you aren't at your desk.
  • You check Slack notifications immediately after waking up.
  • You utilize "fake commutes" (just moving from bed to desk) without mental preparation.
  • You feel irritable about minor work requests.

How to Build "Firewalls" for Your Brain

1. physical Separation

If possible, only work in one specific spot. If you work from the dining table, clear it completely at 6 PM. Put the laptop in a drawer. Out of sight, out of mind.

2. The "Shutdown Ritual"

Cal Newport, author of Deep Work, suggests a formal shutdown ritual.

  • Review tomorrow's to-do list.
  • Close all browser tabs.
  • Say a phrase out loud (e.g., "Shutdown complete"). This triggers your brain that "work mode" is OFF.

3. Wear "Work Shoes"

It sounds silly, but putting on shoes creates a psychological anchor. When you take them off at the end of the day, it's a physical sensation that work is done. Working in pajamas keeps you in a twilight zone of half-work, half-rest.

4. Respect the Lunch Break

Don't eat at your desk while watching YouTube. Go to another room. Go outside. Your brain needs the contrast to reset.

You are not a machine. Productivity requires rest, not just fuel.
